An Itch Scratched Empty An Itch Scratched

.

.................................An Itch Scratched Mastif10

.........................A smile pushes the dimple back on her left jaw,
.........................and it falls in her ear.
.........................“That big?” she says,
.........................brow arching into a pithy question mark.
.........................Four fingers hovering exactly
.........................thirty-eight inches from the kitchen ceiling;
.........................I show her how tall my English Mastiff is.
.........................Oh hogwash, her expression seems to say.

.........................She swills her coffee.

.........................Her dimple crawls back out of her ear,
.........................following pursing lips like a rudderfish.

.........................My voice undulates 360 degrees:
.........................“Wait till you see him scratch, Marlene . . .
.........................starts out with a low-murmured pawing,
.........................then he gets warmed up and starts dig-shouting!
.........................Why, you can almost feel the glory in it.
.........................His eyes cross, then implode into his scull.”
.........................Her dimple vacillates, not sure what to do next,
.........................so I say:
.........................“but anyway, you know how a good scratching feels?”

.........................She leans forward, pats my hand,
.........................eyes curtain-scroll down introspectively.
.........................She sighs -
.........................plainly, a woman with experience in such matters.
.........................“Yes, an itch scratched sometimes feels as good as
.........................sex. ” she whispers.

.........................My face grows ruddy . . .

.........................we sit there drinking our coffee
.........................pretending to laugh about a dog with big paws.
