(Ages 5 - 8) Down By the Edge of the Sea

.................... Little Nellie played alone in her room,
.................... feeding her dolls at a quarter til noon.
.................... There on the window sat Shaynabug,
.................... looking at Nellie who was sprawled on the rug.

.................... "Psst, Little Nellie . . .it's such a fine day,
.................... why do you sit and spend it this way?
.................... You should go play on the sand by the sea -
.................... I'd go with you! Would you please take me?"

.................... "What a silly thing for a ladybug to say!
.................... Ladybugs can't wanna go and play by the bay."
.................... Then Nellie roared as she rose from the floor,
.................... saying, "I'll ask Mother," then skipped for the door.

.................... "Mom,
.................... can we please go to Sandy Land, Sandy Land,
.................... SANDY LAND?
.................... Oh Mom, will you take me to Sandy Land?
.................... I wanna play by the edge of the sea!"

.................... Little Nellie laughed as she raced to her room,
.................... "Guess what Shayna, we're leaving soon!
.................... And sure, you're tiny, but there's one thing I know,
.................... I think it's cool if you still wanna go.”

.................... So down past the boardwalk and out by the sea,
.................... mom bought ice creams and paid for the three.
.................... Nellie and Shayna found a spot on the beach
.................... that was close to the park, and easy to reach.

And Nellie sang,


.................... "Down by the water at the edge of the sea,
.................... I've brought my new friend with me.
.................... We'll build big castles with peach colored sand-
.................... and play by the edge of the sea."

.................... They played and played and swam in the sea,
.................... then Nellie said, "Shayna, let's ride you and me."
.................... So they rode the carousal and tilt-a-wheel,
.................... squealing and anxious as circus seals,
.................... never before had they had so much fun
.................... as they played by the edge of the sea.
.................... Then next, they got on a ferris wheel
.................... and they rode it round and round
.................... Funny, they thought, as they soared through the air
.................... just how small mom looked on the ground.

.................... "Let's go Shaynabug to the beach
.................... and build a new castle the color of peach
.................... cause we're having fun, you and me, me and you,
.................... let's return and play by the sea."

.................... "We'll sing songs of romping fun
.................... and play our games in the afternoon sun.
.................... Let's get mom from under that tree
.................... and go play by the edge of the sea."

.................... But Miss Shaynabug was done for this day,
.................... she winked at Nellie and smiled.
.................... "I've had fun with you, my friend
.................... but now, I've matters I must attend.
.................... So, go with your mom and play by the sea
.................... and tonight, at your window I'll be!

.................... Then she flew, fluttered and hung in the air
.................... by the tiniest wings that could be.
.................... But before she was gone,
.................... she sang a wee song
.................... of their time by the roaring sea.

She sang,

.................... "Down by the water at the edge of the sea,
.................... Little Nellie, her mom and me.
.................... Castles we built from peach colored sand,
.................... that stand in the sand as soldiers stand.
.................... Oh my, we had fun and our time was grand,
.................... and we played by the edge of the sea."
